Untitled. 1959. Oil pastel and ink on vellum. 50 x 65 cm. Signed and dated. Mounted under the passe-partout in places. - Slight handling marks on the reverse. Overall, very good condition.
This work was created in the year Winfred Gaul took part in documenta II, where he was represented with several works as one of the leading figures of the German Informel movement. Rhythmically arranged diagonal strokes in red, ochre and brown converge to form an energetically charged core and create a rhythmic vibration that references Gaul’s ‘colour manuscripts’—created at the same time—and articulates the alternation between gestural release and emerging structural discipline.
