Description
Modern and Contemporary Art
German Post-War Modernism
Henning, Gerda
Untitled (Composition in Green, Blue and Yellow). 1963. Oil on hardboard. 63.5 x 75.5 cm. Signed, signed on the reverse, dated and bearing the estate’s stamp. Framed in an artist’s moulding. – Very subtle craquelure in places, with slight flaking of paint in a few spots. Overall in very good condition. The colours are fresh.
With impasto application of paint and a vigorous brushstroke, an abstract landscape emerges within a condensed pictorial space. Gerda Henning’s paintings became increasingly expressive and Tachist in the early 1960s – whilst retaining an underlying landscape-like quality. The German artist studied in the early 1940s at the Hochschule für Kunsterziehung in Berlin under Willy Jaeckel, Bernhard Dörries and Otto Freytag, and later at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts under Willi Baumeister.
