Description
Modern and Contemporary Art
German Post-War Modernism
Henning, Gerda
Untitled (Composition in Red, Black and Orange). 1964. Oil on canvas. 47.3 x 57.5 cm. Signed, signed on the reverse, dated, with estate stamp and gallery label. – Very subtle craquelure. Overall in very good condition. The colours are fresh.
A vibrantly coloured composition with bold, impasto brushstrokes, revealing only faint hints of a landscape. The work dates from a creative phase in which Henning increasingly abstracted her landscape painting into dense pictorial spaces and fields of colour. The German artist studied in the early 1940s at the Hochschule für Kunsterziehung in Berlin under Willy Jaeckel, Bernhard Dörries and Otto Freytag, and later at the Stuttgart Art Academy under Willi Baumeister.
