Description
Modern and Contemporary Art
German Post-War Modernism
Stein, Matthias
Omina. 1993. Mixed media on paper. 35 x 23.5 cm. Signed, titled and dated; also bears the Galerie Oben stamp on the reverse. - Slightly bumped in places along the edges; a few small, barely noticeable scuffs. Overall, very good condition.
This work was created during a period in which gestural abstraction in reunified Germany was being re-examined in light of the legacy of West German Informel abstraction and the specific experiences of East German artists. By combining the painterly impulse with the gesture of a calligraphic drawing, Matthias Stein expresses both spontaneity and reflection, whilst referring to the exploration of the relationship between sign and meaning that shaped the international debate in the early 1990s.
