Description
Modern and Contemporary Art German Post-War Modernism Gaul, Winfred Fragment of a manuscript floating in space. 1983. Wax crayon and ink on vellum. 44 x 65.5 cm. Signed, dated and titled. Mounted with spot mounting beneath the passe-partout. – Slight studio marks on the reverse. Overall, very good condition. This work combines two of the central visual motifs that have permeated Gaul’s oeuvre since its inception: the gesture of writing and the fragment as a vehicle of meaning. On a glued-on, irregularly torn piece of paper, Gaul creates a calligraphic movement in black and white that oscillates between writing and gesture, recalling his early *Poèmes Visibles* of the late 1950s. A bright blue line running through the pasted-on fragment and continuing down onto the sheet beneath it on the main page links the collage and the background into a single, continuous movement, lending the sheet a cosmic dynamism.
