Modern and Contemporary Art French Modernism Maar, Dora Abstract composition in black and red. c. 1965. Mixed media on vellum. 34 x 43.5 cm. Monogrammed and bearing the artist’s estate stamp. The sheet is slightly wavy due to the medium; there are partial studio marks on the reverse. Overall, very good condition. Private collection, Switzerland. – Following her separation from Picasso, Dora Maar developed a free, abstract visual language in her late work that went beyond Surrealism and drew closer to French Art Informel and Tachism. With its reduced colour palette, this work emphasises the gestural quality and materiality of the application and, in its direct, experimental approach, reflects the introspective nature of Maar’s late work.
