Description
Modern and Contemporary Art
French Modernism
van der Steen, Germain
Figure with foot. Gouache on vellum. 31 x 24 cm. Signed. Mounted in places. - Paper slightly browned, stained and creased; small holes in the corners from previous mounting. Overall in very good condition.
Following his early naturalistic phase, Van der Steen developed a visionary visual language that can be classified as naïve art or Art Brut. His works are often based on dream worlds, imaginary concepts and musical inspirations. The works of this French artist are characterised by a playful spontaneity, which is enhanced by the depiction of cat-like mythical creatures, exotic birds of paradise and fantastical plant forms. Through this mode of expression, Van der Steen creates an autonomous, poetic and magical universe permeated by hybrid creatures and imaginary plant worlds.
