Gering, Andreas
By the Campfire. 1916. Watercolour and graphite on vellum. Image dimensions 20 x 26 cm. Signed, dated and titled on the passe-partout; estate stamp on the reverse. Mounted beneath the passe-partout. – Paper slightly yellowed with subtle stains on both the front and reverse; traces of mounting on the reverse. Overall in very good condition. A composition rendered in fine lines.
An impressive drawing depicting several soldiers gathered round a campfire during the First World War. The work is characteristic of the oeuvre of the Nuremberg artist, who initially studied at the School of Applied Arts in Nuremberg and subsequently at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Carl Johann Becker-Gundahl. The sheet is of great historical value as a contemporary document and is all the more compelling given that Gering was called up for military service after the outbreak of the war in 1914 and was subsequently buried under rubble following a bomb attack, from which he was rescued with serious injuries.
