Modern and Contemporary Art Classical Modernism Gering, Andreas Seated Soldier with Rifle. c. 1916. Black brushwork on vellum, washed. 31.8 x 24 cm. Bear the estate’s stamp on the reverse of the backing board. Mounted at select points on the backing and set free within the passe-partout. – Small holes in the corners from previous mounting, as well as minimal creases and faint stains. Overall in very good condition. An expressive composition. Gering’s work here, as a contemporary witness to the First World War, is a graphic document of great historical value. The Nuremberg artist initially studied at the School of Applied Arts in Nuremberg and subsequently at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Carl Johann Becker-Gundahl. During the war, he was called up for military service. As a result, he produced numerous drawings documenting the everyday lives of soldiers and bringing the events at the front directly to the viewer’s attention. Drawing in black on laid paper, washed. Verso with estate stamp. Partially mounted on backing and framed with a passe-partout. – Small holes in the corners from previous mounting, minimal creases and faint stains.
