Gering’s work here, as a contemporary witness to the First World War, is a graphic document of great historical value. The Nuremberg artist initially studied at the School of Applied Arts in Nuremberg and subsequently at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Carl Johann Becker-Gundahl. During the war, he was called up for military service. As a result, he produced numerous drawings documenting the everyday lives of soldiers and bringing the events at the front directly to the viewer’s attention.
