Gering, Andreas
Soldiers. c. 1916. Brush in black and white on vellum, washed. 25.3 x 36.1 cm. Stamped on the reverse by the estate. Mounted at selected points on backing board and set free within the passe-partout. – Small holes in the corners from previous mounting, two corners with minor losses, subtle stains on the reverse. Overall in very good condition. Powerful composition.
An expressive drawing featuring an almost anonymised and ghostly depiction of several soldiers on the battlefield. The Nuremberg artist succeeds impressively in bringing the atrocities of the First World War directly to the viewer. The sheet is of great historical value as a contemporary document and is all the more compelling given that Gering was conscripted into military service after the outbreak of the war in 1914 and was subsequently buried under rubble following a bomb attack, from which he was rescued, seriously injured.
