Modern and Contemporary Art Classical Modernism Hubbuch, Karl Artists in the circus ring. 1930s. Pencil on light-coloured vellum. 32 x 23.8 cm. Signed. Mounted at selected points on a backing board and set within a passe-partout. – Paper slightly browned and showing slight creases; a small tear at the bottom and a torn edge on the left. Overall in good condition. In the early 20th century, Karl Hubbuch studied with George Grosz and Emil Orlik at what is now the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts and the Training Institute of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin. From 1925, he worked as a professor at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, from which he was dismissed by the National Socialists in 1933. This work clearly demonstrates that, in a large number of drawings, Hubbuch turned to a visual language characterised by precise observation. Alongside Otto Dix, the German artist is counted amongst the leading figures of Verism and New Objectivity in Germany. Pencil on lightweight vellum. Signed. Mounted in places and framed with a passe-partout. – The paper is slightly yellowed and shows faint creases, with a small tear at the bottom and a torn edge on the left. This work clearly demonstrates that Hubbuch, in a large number of drawings, adopted a visual language characterised by precise observation. Alongside Otto Dix, the German artist is regarded as one of the leading figures of Verism and New Objectivity in Germany.
