Modern and Contemporary Art Classical Modernism Kollwitz, Käthe Hamburg Pub. 1901. Etching on vellum. 20 x 25 cm. 27.5 x 34.8 cm. Monogrammed on the left-hand side of the plate. Bears the publisher von der Becke’s blind stamp in the bottom right-hand corner of the plate edge. – Partially showing slight crease marks. Traces of mounting on the reverse. Minimal brown staining. Slight browning within the former passe-partout cut-out. With a small tear in the top right-hand corner. Overall in good condition. Excellent, crisp print with strong plate tone. Cf. Knesebeck 55 IV. d. – Published in 1901 as a standalone study of proletarian life. This sheet is a posthumous print from the original plate in the edition by the Alexander von der Becke publishing house, printed during the Munich publishing phase between 1963 and 1972. The etching was created following Kollwitz’s journey to the North German port city and impressively documents her unvarnished, socially critical engagement with the reality of the working class at the turn of the century. Etching on wove paper. Monogrammed in the plate on the left. Bearing the blindstamp of the publisher von der Becke in the lower right margin of the plate. – Partially with light creasing. Traces of mounting on the reverse. Minimally foxed. Light toning within the former mat opening. With a small loss to the upper right-hand corner. Overall in good condition. Excellent, rich impression with strong plate tone. - Knesebeck 55 IV. d. - Published in 1901 as an independent genre study of proletarian life. This sheet is a posthumous print from the original plate, part of the edition published by Alexander von der Becke, printed during the Munich publishing period between 1963 and 1972. The etching was created following Kollwitz’s journey to the North German port city and impressively documents her unvarnished, socially critical engagement with the reality of the working class at the turn of the century.
