Classical Modernism
Seewald, Tappert
Two works: *Girl with a Hat* and *The Shepherd*. 1963/1919. Linocut on handmade paper and colour woodcut on vellum. 14.8 x 10 cm and 24 x 18 cm. One sheet mounted in a passe-partout at the upper corners. – One sheet slightly yellowed, particularly in the former passe-partout cut-out. One sheet bears the typographic title on the reverse. Traces of mounting on the reverse. Subtle surface wear. – Overall in good condition. Excellent prints with rich colours.
Cf. Wietek 108 and Jentsch H 77 III. – These works originate from significant editorial contexts of German Expressionism. Georg Tappert’s print was published posthumously in 1963 in the renowned *Kunstblätter* of the Galerie Nierendorf (Berlin, issue no. 1) in an edition of 2,000 copies. The print was produced directly from the artist’s original printing block, taken from his estate. Richard Seewald’s work, on the other hand, was published as early as 1919 in the pioneering art journal *Genius. Zeitschrift für werdende und alte Kunst* (Volume 1, First Book) by Kurt Wolff Verlag. It is an original artist’s print, hand-coloured using the labour-intensive pochoir technique with a stencil to enhance the depth of colour specifically for the book edition, with the characteristic typographic spine text on the reverse. Both prints impressively document the innovative power of the Berlin avant-garde in the field of printmaking in the late 1910s.
