Untitled (Shepherdess in the Dachau Moos). c. 1920. Oil on fibreboard. 42 x 55 cm. Signed. Framed. Inscribed on the reverse on a label by a third party, with a provenance note stating ‘Fritz Knöller’. – Slightly darkened. Surface slightly dusty. A few fine, small scratches in the left-hand half of the picture. Left-hand edge slightly rubbed. Overall in good condition. An excellent work with subtle nuances.
Hugo Troendle studied in Karlsruhe, but spent most of the first few years after completing his studies travelling. He lived in France from 1908 to 1912 and associated with artists such as Odilon Redon and Pierre Bonnard. Cézanne’s works, which he had seen shortly before, also exerted a lasting fascination on him. After moving to Munich in 1919, he became a member of the Munich New Secession and the German Artists’ Association. He took part in numerous exhibitions until his works were denounced as ‘degenerate art’.
