Classical Modernism – Bauhaus
Breusing, Ima
3 works. Landscape depictions. Circa 1925. Each a lithograph on vellum, 1 sheet on JWZanders vellum (with watermark). 39 x 30.5 to 45 x 53 cm (sheet size). Each signed. - Somewhat slightly yellowed or slightly browned in places, slight crease marks; 2 sheets with small pinholes in the corners; 1 sheet with isolated water stains and a few small tears (approx. 2 cm) in the upper and lower margins, some with minor paper loss, slightly wavy at the edges. Overall in good condition. Consistently excellent prints of the expressive depictions, each with a wide margin.
Ima Breusing (1902–1986) was one of the female artists of Berlin Modernism. She trained at the Bauhaus, where she studied under Johannes Itten, amongst others, and explored the central questions of form, colour and material. On this basis, she developed an independent artistic voice, which found expression in both fine art prints and applied art works. In Berlin, Breusing was closely integrated into the artistic network of the time. She was a member of the Association of Berlin Women Artists, one of the most important institutions for the promotion of women artists since the late 19th century, and regularly took part in exhibitions. From 1935, she took over as its director. Her style ranges from Bauhaus-influenced formal clarity to a more drawing-based, figurative approach. Breusing’s work is exemplary of a generation of female artists who operated between the avant-garde and institutional structures, and whose contribution to the development of art in the first half of the 20th century is now increasingly being recognised once again.
