Classical Modernism – Expressionism
Gering, Andreas
War. 1916. Colour lithograph on heavy imitation Japanese paper. 21.5 x 27.5 cm (40 x 50 cm). Signed, dated in the stone. – Very delicate and evenly browned due to the paper; mostly showing some crease marks along the edges and occasional soiling. Overall in good condition. Excellent, chalky print of the image with margins.
Gering, who was just 24 years old at the time, was conscripted into the First World War and endured traumatic experiences of cruelty in the trenches; for instance, he was buried under rubble following a bomb attack and rescued with serious injuries. The intensity of the war scene, which the artist here condenses and brings to life in a very vivid way, stems from those first-hand experiences.

He was buried after a bombing raid and was rescued, severely injured. The intensity of the war scene, which the artist depicts here in a highly condensed and tangible manner, can be traced back to these very personal experiences.
