Classical Modernism – Cubism
Villon (i.e. Gaston Duchamp), Jacques Jacques
(I. Portrait of a Woman. II. The Carousel. III. Merchants of the Four Seasons). 1962. Signed and numbered. Each a colour lithograph on Japon Nacré. 30 x 39.2 cm or 21 x 26.6 cm (43.2 x 33 cm) to 50.2 x 29.6 cm (38.8 x 60 cm). Each print is magnificent, rich in colour and fully captures the pictorial quality of the large-format composition with margins, featuring a bleed margin at the bottom and right-hand sides.
Rare. One of 10 copies of the special edition on Japon Nacré. – ‘Portrait d’une Femme’ depicts a stylised portrait of a woman, reflecting Villon’s characteristic style, which lies between Cubism and modernist abstraction. The composition consists of simplified, geometric forms and harmonious areas of colour, which partially abstract the woman’s face and figure without, however, entirely dissolving the character of the subject. *Le Manège* depicts a scene on a carousel (French: ‘manège’) and is characterised by Villon’s distinctive Cubist style. The depiction employs simplified, geometric shapes and lines that abstract the lively action on the carousel and transform it into a rhythmic, almost musical composition. *Les Machands* depicts a scene with merchants symbolising different seasons, a sequence of motifs that reflects both the cyclical nature of time and the vibrant city life of Paris. Here, Villon’s style combines an abstract and Cubist approach with flowing lines and geometric shapes that convey movement and dynamism. The composition is complex, harmoniously interweaving several figures and elements, and utilises a subdued yet varied colour palette.
