Description
Modern and Contemporary Art Concrete Art Maatsch, Thilo Untitled (Floral Relief). 1955. Beech wood. 14 x 4.5 x 2 cm (28 x 7.5 x 9 cm). Signed and dated. Mounted on an oak plinth. – Mounting fragile. Overall in good condition. Finely crafted relief. The German graphic artist, painter and sculptor Thilo Maatsch gained prominence in the 1920s, primarily through his geometric-abstract compositions of coloured planes. During the Nazi era, his works were classified as ‘degenerate’, whereupon Maatsch largely ceased his artistic activities and devoted himself exclusively to his profession as a teacher. After the end of the Second World War, Maatsch sought new, freer forms of expression and increasingly turned to biomorphic abstraction, in which constructive elements merge with floral and figural motifs. During this phase, the artist produced works on paper, woodcuts and small-scale sculptures that were atypical for him and differ significantly from the rest of his oeuvre. The softly rounded organic forms and plant-like elements that also characterise this work are closely linked to the organic art of the 1950s and 1960s, as exemplified by Barbara Hepworth, for instance.
