Modern and Contemporary Art
Concrete Art
Maatsch, Thilo
Untitled (Zoomorphic Relief). 1950s. Beech wood. 9 x 4 x 0.8 cm (16 x 5.4 x 3 cm). Engraved signature and place name. Mounted on an oak plinth. – Mounting fragile. Overall in good condition. Finely crafted relief.
Bearing the incised name of the artist’s place of death, Königslutter. – This small-scale sculpture was created during a creative phase in Maatsch’s career following the Second World War, in which the artist sought new, free forms of expression and increasingly turned towards biomorphic abstraction. This resulted in works atypical of the artist, such as woodcuts and sculptures that blend constructive elements with floral and figural motifs, and which differ markedly from the rest of his oeuvre.
