Modern and Contemporary Art New Objectivity Schlichter, Rudolf Calina acanthifolia. 1920s. Coloured pencil on light vellum. 40.5 x 27 cm. Stamped on the reverse by the estate. Mounted at select points on a backing board and set within a passe-partout. – Paper slightly yellowed, with faint creases and irregularly trimmed; colour stains on the reverse. Overall in good condition. A delicate piece of work. A delicately executed study of a wild ginger. The German artist Rudolf Schlichter studied painting at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts between 1910 and 1916, moved to Berlin in 1919 and, alongside George Grosz, John Heartfield and Otto Dix, was a member of the November Group. In the early 1930s, he left Berlin, turned to Catholicism and increasingly devoted himself to realistic landscape depictions. This drawing probably dates from this creative phase in the episcopal city of Rottenburg am Neckar. New Objectivity. – Coloured pencil on lightweight vellum. Estate stamp on the reverse.
