Kurt Römhild is one of the most distinctive figures in Leipzig’s graphic art scene. After training as a technical draughtsman, he studied at the Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Design in Leipzig under Bernhard Heisig and Emil Koch in 1953–54, and subsequently worked as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. His work is characterised by an abstract, highly reduced formal language. In his drawings, prints and mixed-media works, Römhild combines free-flowing lines, blurred tonal values and sparingly applied coloured accents to create open, almost calligraphic compositions.
