Description
Modern and Contemporary Art
Surrealism
Masson, André
(La Seine). 1962. Colour lithograph on Arches vellum. 60 x 39.5 cm (43 x 62.8 cm). A magnificent, rich print that captures the painterly quality of this large-format work with margins, featuring a watermark on the right-hand side. – A slight stain on the lower left outer margin.
Rare. One of 30 copies of the special edition on wide-margin Velin d’Arches. - Saphire, Lawrence/Cramer (1994), 290. - Not listed in Passeron. - Masson interprets the banks of the Seine in Paris not as a realistic landscape, but as an ensemble of lively, interflowing lines and forms. The banks, bridges and movements of the water are abstracted and dissolved; instead, a spontaneous, gestural visual language dominates, inviting the viewer to take an associative, almost introspective look at the urban landscape.
