Paolini, Giulio
2 works. Chiaroscuro. From: Sequences. 1998. Each a colour silkscreen and offset lithograph on Gohrsmühle Velin paper, printed on both sides and folded into passe-partouts. Each 50 x 40 cm. Each signed and numbered, and bearing the publisher’s stamp on the reverse. – Overall in very good condition. Magnificent, high-contrast prints without margins.
One of 60 copies each. – Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York. - In *Chiaroscuro* (‘Light and Dark’), Giulio Paolini juxtaposes two versions of the same image: a black spot on a white background, based on Picabia’s *La Sainte-Vierge* from 1920, and a white spot on a black background, based on a photograph of fireworks. The reversal is not merely formal, but programmatic: according to Paolini, each of his works revolves around a blind spot implicit in the image – a mirror that simultaneously reveals and conceals the appearance. The diptych format makes this principle of reflection and reversal the visible structure of the work itself.
