Description
[CONTEMPORARY ART, SAUDI ARABIA] Riyad hier et aujourd'hui, les Arts Plastiques, 1986, exhibition catalogue, Grand-Palais, Paris, 10-21 December 1986. In-4 paperback, 72 pp. with 32 colour illustrations. In French. Exhibition inaugurated by Prince Salman Bin Abdul-Aziz (Governor of Riyadh Province) and Jacques Chirac (Prime Minister), curated by Saad Al Obaied (Chairman of the Fine Arts Committee of the Saudi Arabian Society for Culture and Arts), edited by Mohamed El-Boukili. Travelling exhibition: Cologne, Stuttgart, Hamburg in 1985, Riyadh, London and Paris in 1986, Cairo in 1987, Washington, Atlanta, Dallas, New York, Boston, Los Angeles in 1989-1990 and Montreal 1991. Initially centred on the capital and entitled "Riyadh Yesterday and Today", the exhibition was renamed "Saudi Arabia Yesterday and Today", incorporating new elements including an exhibition on Mecca and Medina that took place in Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. The introductory text by Saad Al-Obaied (1945-2020), a pioneer of modern art in Saudi Arabia, traces the history of the visual arts in the kingdom. 32 Saudi artists, both men and women, are represented, with biographies and exhibition lists; 65 works exhibited, 32 reproduced. The work Windows by Ahmed Al-Sabit, reproduced on the accompanying poster, appears in the catalogue under no. 21 without being reproduced.
