Provenance
Acquired directly from the artist Fatima Hassan El Farrouj through Jacqueline Brodskis, in April 1985, on the occasion of the exhibition "19 peintres du Maroc", presented by the Centre national d'art contemporain de Grenoble.
Produced in 1981, between the exhibition at the Rade Museum in Hamburg (1980) and the major group show in Grenoble (1985), Cortège illustrates the language that Fatima Hassan El Farouj, a self-taught embroiderer, henna artist, weaver and potter, forged from traditional arts. The scene - a couple returning to the village accompanied by a loaded animal - unfolds without any academic perspective: tight motifs, black circles, interlocking colours. This ornamental density is often mistakenly associated with naive art, but in reality it stems from a learned iconographic tradition in which the human figure, gardens and nature become the media for a symbolic and spiritual imagination.
