We would like to thank Madame Rabia Aroussi for confirming the authenticity of this work.
Figure accroupie belongs to Chaïbia's early period, around 1970, a seminal period when her language was consolidating. The silhouettes framed in black, the bold colours and the frontal position of the figures create an immediately recognisable universe. It was this early body of work, noticed by the critic and collector Pierre Gaudibert in the 1970s, that established the artist's international reputation.
A self-taught artist born in Chtouka in 1929, Chaïbia Tallal began painting in the early 1960s, under the guidance of her son Hossein Tallal. From 1966 onwards, she exhibited in Casablanca and Paris, before going on to show her work in major international institutions (Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Palais des Nations in Geneva, Museum of African Art in New York). A tutelary figure of naive and popular Moroccan painting, his work - inspired by rural life and Moroccan women - bears witness to an unparalleled expressive vitality.
