Tibari KANTOUR (Casablanca born 1954) The tree, spices 2003 Two mixed techniques on vegetable paper 38 x 47 cm Signed in Arabic and Latin letters, and dated Tibari Kantour 2003. *** Two mixed media works on vegetal paper, each signed in Arabic and Latin script and dated (each 15 × 18½ in.) Painted in 2003. Provenance French private collection, donated by the artist in 2004. Bibliography Reproduced in the exhibition catalogue Tibari Kantour , L'Arbre, Institut Français de Marrakech, 2003. Since the late 1980s, Tibari Kantour has been developing a body of work deeply rooted in matter and gesture. After making a name for himself in Belgium, he began exhibiting in Rabat at Pauline de Mazières' L'Atelier gallery in 1989, attracting attention for a rare practice: that of an artist who makes his own media, including paper, from plant fibres, which he grinds, presses and dries using a demanding craft process. This direct relationship with the material is at the heart of his work. Kantour's world unfolds like an 'inner landscape', where the leaf becomes a metaphor for the living. The thick, fibrous surfaces seem to be criss-crossed by veins, striations and organic flows that evoke both bark and sap. The tree is never represented head-on: it emerges. It can be discerned in the very structure of the work, on the edge between the visible and the unspeakable.
