Mohamed Mrabet is best known as a storyteller: his tales, recorded and translated by Paul Bowles, form one of the most singular bodies of Maghrebi literature of the second half of the twentieth century. His felt-tip drawings are a rarer facet of his work, nourished by the same universes populated by birds, symbols and dreamlike images as his stories. Oiseaux (1998) bears witness to this personal graphic imagination - direct, free and instantly recognisable.
