He studied at the École d'art de la rue des Consuls, then from 1931 to 1936 the indigenous arts section of the École des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, where he was a pupil of Léon Cauvy and Louis Ferdinand Antoni, and was introduced to illumination by Omar and Mohamed Racim. After receiving a scholarship, he continued his training at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (1936-1939) in Roland Oudot's workshop, and worked at the Manufacture de Sèvres. Prisoner of war from 1939 to 1943, he resumed his intense exhibition activity in Paris and Europe after his release.
Returning to Algeria in 1963, he was appointed curator of the Musée national des antiquités et des arts islamiques in Algiers, a post he held until his death. A founding member of the UNAP, he taught at the Algiers School of Fine Arts while continuing his prolific output - miniatures, illuminations, calligraphy, paintings - and designed the models for some sixty Algerian stamps and banknotes. A complete artist, he masters both traditional arts and easel painting.
