Abdel-Halim HEMCHE (Tlemcen 1908- Paris 1979) Reflection of Algiers-Marché Oil on panel 60 x 80 cm Signed lower left in Arabic On the back are the handwritten annotations Reflets d'Alger Marché, Hemche Abd-el-Halim and the stamp of the Société des Artistes Français *** Oil on panel, signed lower left in Arabic ; titled and inscribed on the reverse (23⅝ × 31½ in.) A pupil of Cauvy at the École des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, then a boarder at the Devambez studio in Paris, Hemchel was awarded the Jean Bévia scholarship in 1928 and that of the city of Algiers in 1929. Appointed inspector of Moroccan arts in Rabat that same year, he developed a unique body of work at the crossroads of North African influences and French academic training. Hemche took part in the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1937, then exhibited regularly at the Salons des artistes français et de la France d'Outre-mer. From the 1940s onwards, he divided his time between Algeria, Morocco and France, before teaching drawing at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris after 1962.
