Self-taught, Hacène Benaboura developed a body of work deeply attached to Algiers and its working-class environment, in particular the Casbah, whose alleyways, squares and scenes of life he painted with great documentary and poetic sensitivity. His paintings are characterised by a particular attention to traditional architecture, the play of shadows and urban atmospheres. Through his views of Algiers, Benaboura contributed to the emergence of an Algerian view of the city, far removed from the picturesque European orientalism. Today, his work is an invaluable record of the visual memory of the Kasbah and the historic districts of Algiers before their profound transformations in the twentieth century.
