We would like to thank Madame Naget Khadda for confirming the authenticity of this work.
A key figure in Algerian modernism, Mohammed Khadda was one of the main architects of the post-independence artistic revival. Born in 1930 in Mostaganem, he started out as a printer's apprentice, where he soon mastered drawing, typography and graphic reproduction techniques. In 1953, he moved to Paris and studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
On his return to Algeria in 1963, he played an active part in shaping the artistic scene, co-founding the Union nationale des arts plastiques (1964) and then the Aouchem group in 1967, which advocated the reappropriation of Arab-Berber symbolic systems and vernacular arts. His pictorial work - calligraphic tracings, organic patterns, palimpsests of lines - has established itself as one of the major languages of the "School of the Sign".
At the same time, Khadda developed an important body of work as an engraver (linocuts, lithographs, monotypes), now preserved in the Musée National des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, and a prolific activity as a poster artist for Algerian cultural institutions. These two aspects of his work, which are not yet widely available on the market, reveal the graphic rigour and cultural commitment that run through his entire approach.
