An Algerian painter trained at the Casa de Velázquez (1959), Mohamed Bouzid returned to Algeria in 1962 and created the seal and coat of arms of the Algerian Republic. The following year, he took part in the Algerian Painters exhibition alongside Aksouh, Baya, Benanteur, Guermaz, Issiakhem, Khadda, Mammeri and Racim, and co-founded the Union nationale des arts plastiques. Forced into exile in 1994, he remained active on the international scene. Several retrospectives have been devoted to his work: at the Musée national des beaux-arts in Algiers (1999), at UNESCO (2008) and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Algerian independence (2012).
