Ahmed Salah BARA (Sedrata/Souk Ahras, born 1970) Two sisters, 2012 Oil on canvas 69 x 51.5 cm Signed and dated lower right BARA 2012 Countersigned and titled in Latin and Arabic letters on the back *** Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right; signed and titled on the reverse (27⅛ × 20¼ in.). Painted in 2012. Provenance Private collection, acquired from the artist. Bibliography Reproduced in Ali El Hadj Tahar. La Peinture Algérienne. Dar el Hikma, Stains, 2023. p. 148 After studying biology at the University of Annaba, Bara devoted himself entirely to painting. Her work, a cross between naïve, figurative and revisited neo-orientalism, places Algerian women at the centre of a celebration of heritage and cultural identity. Targui, Kabyle, Chaoui and Saharan women appear in their traditional finery and costumes, in scenes of intimacy and ritual - maternity, hammam, marriage, qaadate. One of her most recognisable signatures is the stylised face with its eyes intensely highlighted with blue blush.
