Painted during the artist's early period in the 1970s. Provenance Private collection acquired from the artist's family We would like to thank Hocine Ziani for confirming the authenticity of this work. This work is one of Ziani's earliest canvases, and his first solo exhibition in an Algerian gallery in 1979. This view of the Kasbah is an established motif in the Algerian pictorial lexicon - it is found in particular in the work of his contemporary Abdelaziz Zodmi (Panorama de la peinture algérienne 1962-1994, p. 50). Ziani will return to it in 2018, taking up the same composition with a more contemporary sensibility: this return confers on the present canvas a particular value as a point of origin in his career.
