Gérard DI MACCIO (Algiers 1938) Hands Mixed media on paper 76 x 51 cm Signed lower right Di Maccio *** Mixed media on paper, signed lower right (30 × 20 in.) At the age of 14, Di-Maccio showed his precocious talent by winning first prize in drawing at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, his home town. He continued his training in Paris, attending the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts, where he perfected his technique. His first solo exhibitions took place in Paris in 1979, where he was enthusiastically received. Between 1994 and 1997, the artist created a monumental work 27 metres long and 9 metres high, considered to be the largest canvas in the world created by a single artist. This fresco, celebrating humanity, was exhibited in Geneva, then Carthage, Cleveland, New York, Paris and finally Japan, where it was installed in the Di-Maccio Museum inaugurated in 2000 in Osaka.
