Mahjoub Ben Bella trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Oran and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tourcoing, before continuing his studies at the École supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and the École supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His pictorial language, initially rooted in Arabic calligraphy, evolved into a lyrical abstraction abounding in shapes and colours, part of the abstract expressionist movement on both sides of the Atlantic.
An artist of international stature, he has exhibited all over the world, and his works can be found in prestigious collections such as the British Museum, the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, LaM and La Piscine. His monumental work is just as remarkable: a fresco at Riyadh airport (1982), the painting of 12 km of cobblestones on the Paris-Roubaix course (1986), a portrait of Nelson Mandela for the Wembley concert (1988), a 4,000 m² projection at the São Paulo stadium (1999), and the decoration of a Tourcoing underground station (2000).
His work is held in numerous public collections in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, including the British Museum (London), the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, LaM and La Piscine (Northern France), the Mathaf (Doha), the Barjeel Art Foundation (Sharjah), the Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris), MACAM (Tunis) and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts (Amman).
