This series, presented in 2008 at the Éric Dupont gallery in Paris, evokes the plumb bob - a fundamental tool in the building trades that the artist himself has practised. Heads arranged at a height, extended by wires finished with masses of lead, materialise an axis of descent that is both physical and symbolic: the molten lead shapes also refer to a divinatory practice widespread in Algeria. Through this characteristic economy of means, Oulab offers a meditation on verticality, transmission and balance, at the crossroads of working-class experience and a spirituality imbued with Sufi references. The work also featured in the Traces du sacré exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, 2008.
A Franco-Algerian artist who lives and works in Marseille, trained in Algiers and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, Oulab has developed a multi-disciplinary practice - sculpture, drawing, installation and video - that constantly questions memory, transmission and the sacred. His work is a process of reduction and simplification, using simplified objects and humble materials - rope, wire and wood - charged with cultural, social and spiritual resonances accumulated over centuries. The notion of links, both literal and symbolic, is at the heart of his research: linking forms, linking histories, linking civilisations. A residency at the Atelier Calder enabled him to develop this theme on a monumental scale.
Represented by the Éric Dupont gallery in Paris, he took part in the Les Traces du Sacré exhibition at the Musée national d'art moderne - Centre Georges Pompidou in 2008. His work can be found in several public collections in France and Luxembourg.
