Description
Aly Ben SALEM (Tunis 1910 - Stockholm 2001) Springtime Gouache on paper 86 x 67 cm Signed lower left. Titled on the back. *** Gouache on paper, signed lower left ; titled on the reverse (33⅞ × 26⅜ in.) Aly Ben Salem was the first Tunisian admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Tunis, trained by Armand Vergeaud. Graduating in 1933, he was awarded the Tunisian government's Prix des Beaux-Arts in 1936 - the first Tunisian Arab artist to achieve this distinction - and then spent time in Paris from 1937 to 1940, at the heart of artistic life in Montparnasse. On his return to Tunisia, he founded the École des Beaux-Arts in Sfax before settling permanently in Sweden in 1950, where he continued to work intensively while supporting the cause of Tunisian independence. His work is characterised by stylised figuration with dreamlike overtones: elongated silhouettes, transfigured everyday scenes, luminous colours inherited from Persian and Indian miniatures. He has exhibited in Tunisia, Sweden, the United States and Europe. His work was recently the subject of a major re-reading at the Arab Presences exhibition at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris (2024) and a solo exhibition at the Elmarsa Gallery, Dubai (2023).
