Femme à la coiffure is one of a series that Ben Abdallah developed in the 1960s and 1970s, in which scenes from everyday life stand out against broad gradations of colour that abstract the ground and suspend the figure in a timeless space. Here, the stylistic shift is fully apparent: large format, isolated figures against a plain background, economy of staging. The kneeling young woman slowly untangles her long hair - an intimate gesture captured in an almost meditative stillness.
The toilet is the focus of the artist's attention. The sleeves embroidered using the mtarrz technique, the rihana chain with flat rings topped with an aghal pendant, the hands tinted with henna: every detail is that of a meticulously observed Tunisian clothing and ornamental heritage. True to his approach, Ben Abdallah enhances the ensemble - embroidery, jewellery and ornaments - with gold and silver pigments, giving these traditional elements an almost sacred preciousness.
