Description
[AFRICAN, MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ARTS]
First World Festival of Negro Arts held from 1 to 24 April 1966 in Dakar, Senegal.
Square format (24.5 cm), bound in publisher's hardback with rhodoid-covered dust jacket, 155 pp. profusely illustrated in colour and black. In French. (Accident on back cover).
An event conceived from an idea by Leopold Sedar Senghor, the first World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar aimed to promote pan-Africanism through the arts in the wake of the continent's independence. Bringing together 69 countries, all the arts were represented: music, dance, theatre, literature, cinema, fine arts, etc. Many cultural figures lent their support through their active participation, including Aimé Césaire and André Malraux. A modern art exhibition, "Tendances et confrontations", brought together works by African artists such as Iba N'Diaye (Senegal), Christian Lattier (Ivory Coast) and Fela Kefi (Tunisia).
