Kabinda Kunkulu Victor was born in 1927 in the village of Kinda, Congo, to parents of Ndembu ethnicity. He moved to Élisabethville (now Lubumbashi) to attend school in 1942, and in 1948 joined the "Le Hangar" studio, founded by Pierre Romain-Desfossés, alongside Bela Sara, Pilipili Mulongoy and Mwenze Kibwanga. Strongly influenced by Pilipili Mulongoy, he specialised in natural landscapes and became known for his depictions of birds and fish. He in turn passed on his knowledge to other artists. Throughout the Congo's political transitions, he also worked in a variety of occupations - nurse, museum attendant - without ever giving up painting. His work features in the landmark exhibition Congo Beauté 1926-2015 at the Fondation Cartier, Paris.
