Fish and aquatic scenes are among Bela Sara's favourite subjects, which he approaches using a singular technique: painting directly with his fingertips. This digital gesturality gives his works a spontaneous freshness - soft contours, deep colours - and produces almost fluid forms that naturally follow the movement of the water. The five bodies respond to each other and intersect in an instinctive decorative balance, inherited as much from the visual traditions of Central Africa as from the teaching of Le Hangar.
Originally from Chad, Bela Sara began painting in the late 1940s while working as a night watchman in Elisabethville (Lubumbashi). Trained and then taught at Le Hangar - the school founded by patron Pierre Romain-Desfossés - he established himself as one of the leading figures of modern art in Central Africa. His work can now be seen at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
