Pilipili MULONGOY (DRC 1914 - 2007) Oil on canvas 64.5 x 95.5 cm Signed lower right Pilipili *** Oil on canvas, signed lower right, 25⅜ × 37⅝ in. Born into a fishing family in Kongolo, Pili Pili Mulongoy joined the Atelier du Hangar in Elisabethville in 1947, founded by Pierre Romain-Desfossés, becoming one of his closest pupils. He went on to teach at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lubumbashi. Inspired by nature and oral traditions, his work unfolds in a dreamlike, colourful universe, combining reality and ancient legends. A major figure in Congolese painting, his work was featured in the Fondation Cartier's Beauté Congo exhibition in 2015.
