A singular work in Kibwanga's output, Cérémonie devant le calvaire bears witness to the way in which the artists of the Hangar studio reinterpreted the values of their own culture through a Christian prism. Far from the hunting and fishing scenes that make up his usual repertoire, the artist's vision here is serious and interior: the figures gathered under the cross are not celebrating - they are weeping, mourning.
