Description
Marcel GOTENE (Yaba 1939 - Rabat 2013) Dance with tambourines, (19)63 Oil on canvas 60 x 100 cm Signed and dated lower left Gotene 63 Pigments missing *** Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 23⅝ × 39⅜ in. Painted in 1963. Born around 1939 in Yaba, in the Plateaux department (Congo), Marcel Gotène arrived in Brazzaville in 1951 and discovered the Poto-Poto School, where Pierre Lods opened the studio to him and provided him with materials without imposing any direction: "Do what you want, what you see." From 1953, he broke away from the school to pursue a solo career. In 1963, a grant from the French Cooperation enabled him to spend a few months with Jean Lurçat before going to the Académie des Arts Plastiques in Paris, where he learned oil painting. A second stay in France (1969-1971) took him to the Collège Technique d'Arts Graphiques, from which he graduated in screen printing, and to the École Nationale de la Tapisserie d'Aubusson. He exhibited his work in Paris throughout the 1970s - at the Maison de l'Iran gallery, the Cachan Biennial, and on rue Cassette - and in 1972 was awarded the Leonardo da Vinci medal by the Académie Internationale de Lutèce, followed by the Prix France-Afrique in 1973. In 1987, he was awarded the Agip Recherche Congo prize in Brazzaville, and in 2007 the capital's Grand Prix d'Art. His work oscillates between figuration and abstraction: against blue or grey backgrounds, in a resolutely two-dimensional space, he unfurls a world populated by dancers, musicians and half-animal, half-silk creatures, treated in broad flat tints of colour - red, purple, orange, violet - separated by an incisive stroke. Heir to the visual traditions of his childhood as much as to his time with Lurçat, he created a painting of movement and wonder that his contemporaries readily compared to Chagall or Gromaire. Marcel Gotène died on 19 February 2013 in Rabat. Acquired in 2020 from a French family whose parents had lived in Brazzaville in the 1950s and 1960s and who had inherited several paintings of the Congo.
