Born in 1953 in Diré, Mali, Abdoulaye Konaté trained at the École Nationale des Arts in Bamako before continuing his studies at the Institut Supérieur des Arts in Havana. During the 1990s, he abandoned canvas and brushes to make fabric his exclusive material: dyed African bazin, cut and reassembled into vast hand-embroidered compositions, where highly sophisticated chromatic gradations - from fiery red to midnight blue, emerald to gold - blend with signs borrowed from African and Mediterranean visual traditions. His work combines socio-political commitment with formal research into the relationship between colours, combining African symbolism with modernity. Present in numerous international institutional collections and regularly invited to major biennials, Abdoulaye Konaté is today one of the leading figures in contemporary African art.
