Philippe SENE (Diouroup, 1949) Flax spinners, 1990 Gouache 95 x 80 cm Signed and dated below Philippe Sené 90. *** Gouache, signed and dated lower, 37⅜ × 31½ in. Executed in 1990. Provenance J. Lassaque Collection, acquired directly from the artist in the 1990s. Born in 1949 in Diouroup, in the Siné-Saloum region, Philippe Sène trained at the École Nationale des Arts de Dakar as an auditor between 1970 and 1973, in the plastic research section directed by Pierre Lods. Lods' non-academic teaching approach helped to structure his practice and consolidate his technical mastery. After moving to the Cité des Artistes in Colobane, Dakar, Sène developed a body of work dominated by formal rhythms, stylisation and strong chromaticism. An active artist on the Senegalese scene, he has taken part in several group and solo exhibitions in Senegal and abroad.
