Description
Moustapha BAIDI OUMAROU (Niger, Mamoua born 1997) The Princes of the Street, 2021 Acrylic and posca on canvas H. 140 ; L. 130 cm *** Acrylic and posca on canvas, 55⅛ × 51⅛ in. Painted in 2021. Provenance Galerie Afikaris, Paris. Acquired in 2021. Moustapha Baidi Oumarou is a self-taught painter who began to make a name for himself at the age of seventeen, winning a prize at the Yawalta festival. His paintings combine two worlds: the luxuriant, nocturnal botany of Central Africa, rendered in flat, bright colours inherited from the chromatic deserts of northern Cameroon, and the human figure - abandoned women, street children, the faceless forgotten - which he elevates to the status of allegories of the human condition. In his compositions, the plant motif and the human subject vie for the foreground in a tense decorative space, where dream and reality rub shoulders in a darkened Eden. His work follows in the footsteps of an aesthetic specific to West Africa in the 1920s-1960s, with a focus on the body's relationship with nature and the absence of background.
