Kishan Chand ARYAN (India, Amritsar, 1919 - Gurugram, 2002) The girl with the kanjira (tambourine), circa 1945 Watercolour on paper 23 x 15.2 cm Signed lower right. On the back is a label with the title in English "Girl with Canjeera (sketch from Conjeevaram)", the artist's name and address in Delhi. *** Watercolour on paper, signed lower right, 9 × 6 in. Executed circa 1945. Kishan Chand Aryan was a self-taught painter and sculptor from a family of Punjabi artists. He set up a studio in Lahore before moving to Delhi in 1947, where he took part in the Delhi Silpi Chakra collective. His work evolved from figurative works inspired by Kangra miniatures to abstract metal assemblages, which won him the National Prize of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1964. At the same time, he collected and studied folk and tribal art, publishing more than twenty works on these traditions.
